Grandmothers are versatile

This blog makes everyone feel nostalgic about one’s days with grandmothers. While my maternal grandmother is very astute and symbol of care and punctuality, my paternal grandmother is a picture of dignity and grace.
From now on, I will be discussing about grandmother in general. Mother of seven to eight, the way she(grandmother) brought up kids is the live example of how well one manages a group of diverse soldiers.
Though she studied up to 2nd or 3rd standard, she is a multiple PhDs holder.
The best consultant when any occasion, festival, ritual is conducted as she knows all the processes to be followed. That day is very near, when we stop celebrating festivals and rituals in the same traditional manner  we celebrated in the past.
She doesn’t need to hold any degree in catering technology to cook variety of spices and dishes. She is the source of all the delicious powders and pickles that we eat today along with rice and other food items.
Though she is not a story writer, she has an infinite collection of very good stories and epics. Though she is not interested in the current style serials and reality shows, she is interested in watching “Sri Krishna” , “Mahabharata” etc in Doordarshan channel that comes on every Sunday.
She is the only person bridging the gap between pre independence and post independence eras. She has a bunch full of experiences to talk about. She has experienced the days when our technologies are not well advanced, our country was under developed, when electricity was not invented, when the medicine was in its early ages.
Her stamina is indomitable because the same legs have walked miles to get pots of water, the same fingers have made many stitches to the clothes of all the family members, the same eyes have taken care of seven to eight kids and same tongue has taught profound management principles and disciplines. Of course her vision is perfect atleast till the age she was affected with cataract. She can even now able to read newspaper perfectly from page 1 to page n.
She is one of the major sources of pocket money to the grandsons and granddaughter, effectively managing her pension money apart from spending it to her own medicines. She is very affectionate.
I was astonished when I saw an old lady in seventies trying to catch a running city bus.  At that age someone should be there to offer a helping hand to her, which is missing in day to day world. She can survive only in villages and small towns. The flyovers, traffic rules, subways, elevators  in cities are really confusing for her to manage with. It is our job to not to ignore taking care of her at that age. There are many who join ashrams, old age homes because of lack of care from sons/daughters feeling her as an onus to them. Most of the grandmothers are prone to Alzheimer’s disease. This makes them forget the past and behave in a childish way t ill the end.  What  she needed is care.
She is the person who takes care of us when our parents are out of station.  But, when she grew older the same sons/ daughters  feel that it is a difficult task to keep her with them. That is why she keeps changing her stay in each son’s house for every 2 or 3 months. Even her pension amount is being dragged by her sons in few cases in one or the other manner. Now, emergence of nuclear families made her life even more miserable.
We need to respect her for leading life at that age and take very well care of her.

Why engineers are dissatisfied?

As most of us know engineering background comprises of diverse branches like civil, mechanical, metallurgy,bio-technology, electrical, electronics, communications, Instrumentation, computers etc. Are we really thinking twice before choosing a specialized branch? If we are choosing a branch because it has good boom or because of its availability, then we are landing up in soup. Every human has an innate talent in one or more of the engineering areas. Say at the age of 17, we are not matured enough to decide the branch. Our parents, relatives , concerns gather all the information about the courses and they will narrow in on a course that possess good value in the market . There is nothing wrong in what they are doing. But, whether we are satisfied with the course or not will be known only at the end of 4 years of graduation. We can work hard , do our best, get a good percentage throughout the course. But, are we interested to further our career in the same course. It is a trillion dollar question.
Thanks to the software industry which has provided enormous employment opportunities to all of us. There are many non computer engineers who have chosen software field due to an easy entry into the job, or not getting enough opportunities in their respective engineering backgrounds or disliking their field of graduation. Some of them are really performing well in their current job where as some are not. In the list of  dissatisfied employees, some are quitting the company and pursuing  higher studies in their country or abroad and some are again trying to get a job into core engineering backgrounds and some are befuddled what to do as they show hatred towards not only current field of job but also towards their field of engineering. I, myself an electrical engineer and am one of these confused lots. If we explore to know what is the root cause of it, then lets go to our post 12th standard.
There should be some regulation in our education norms in choosing engineering backgrounds. There should be an exam or an interview to extract each student’s talents or skills in respective engineering courses. This exam should not be similar to the other entrance exams. It should  test the skills, interests, aspirations that are hidden inside a student’s brain. Based on which he/she should be assigned that course. This not only makes the student excel in his graduation but also makes him choose correct and stable career. This will in turn increase students’ interest towards research and get patents which in turn improves our country’s health and wealth. Therefore, our education system needs to undergo sea changes in order to extract best out of a person.
This problem is not existing in the engineering alone, but in all the other fields too.
